Ayato Genshin Impact Guide

The boba tea-loving, head of the Kamisato clan: Kamisato Ayato is the newest face to appear in Genshin Impact. The open-world RPG has countless characters for players to obtain and use either through in-game progression or through the in-game currency known as ‘primogems’.

In this Ayato Genshin Impact guide, I hope to help you figure out whether Kamisato Ayato will be a good fit for your team, what some of the best artifact sets and weapons are to pair with him, and whether he will be worth the time and resource cost to build.

Kamisato Ayato: Character details

The young but highly accomplished head of the Yashiros Commission’s Kamisato Clan. Cultured and polite, he is a man of many ways and means.

  • Title: Kamisato Ayato
  • Nationality: Inazuma
  • Rarity: 5-star
  • Weapon type: Sword
  • Element: Hydro
  • Birthday: 26 March

Kamisato Ayato, or just Ayato, has been long anticipated in spite of his first appearance only coming in the 2.6 updates. Being fan-favourite Kamisato Ayaka‘s older brother, many Genshin Impact players have been waiting for Ayato to have more of a prominent role within the in-game lore. Ayato has arrived in the 2.6 updates with his story quest, costing one story key to unlock.

Ayato’s gameplay offers a decent amount of versatility for what is predominantly the main DPS role, however, this does not mean that he cannot play exceedingly well as a sub DPS. He can deal high amounts of damage to single and multiple targets as well as have some AOE capabilities.

His elemental burst applies hydro and deals damage to a wide area, which is great when using him on his own or in conjunction with other elements to deal huge damage. At present, he is one of the few hydro characters that can deal large AOE damage over an extended period.

With all of this considered, Kamisato Ayato could become an integral part of your team, and for a relatively low investment, he can have a huge damage payout.

Kamisato Ayato: Character Availability

Materials needed for Kamisato Ayato

Kamisato Ayato is available in the Azure Excursion banner, which is available in the 2.6 Genshin Impact update from the 30th of March 2022 until the 20th of April 2022. Alongside Ayato, the popular anemo archon Venti is receiving a re-run so it is important to decide which limited 5-star character will be a good fit for your team composition.

On both limited wish banners, the 4-star characters Xiangling, Sucrose, and Yun-Jin will be featured. All of whom are excellent support characters who can most certainly find a place on anyone’s team.

Both Xiangling and Sucrose have amazing synergy potential with Ayato, and Yun-Jin, being the most recent 4-star addition to the game, will most certainly be saught after for additional constellations, making these sets of banners well worth wishing on even if you, unfortunately, end up missing out on the featured 5-star units.

Materials needed for Kamisato Ayato

Now that you’ve decided whether or not you want to roll for Kamisato Ayato, you now need to think about the materials needed to level him to his full potential. In this guide, I will show you all the materials you’ll need to get Ayato to the max level, 90, as well as bring his talents up to level 10.

This is more of a recommendation than a necessity, as fully leveling and crowning a character is very resource heavy, so I’d personally recommend you hold onto your crowns to give to a character you truly love, and if that happens to be Ayato, fantastic!

It is still important to remember that he is just as playable at level 80 with level 8 talents as he is with maxed-out stats. The only drawback is you won’t be able to have him hit as hard as possible, but this only really limits you in the Spiral Abyss, so if you’re a more casual player it may be more resource-efficient for you to not max out Kamisato Ayato right away!

The materials needed to get Kamisato Ayato to level 90:

  • Mora – 2095230
  • Sakura Bloom – 168
  • Hero’s Wit – 419
  • Varunada Lazurite Sliver – 1
  • Varunada Lazurite Fragment – 9
  • Varunada Lazurite Chunk – 9
  • Varunada Lazurite Gemstone – 6
  • Old Handguard – 18
  • Kageuchi Handguard – 30
  • Famed Handguard – 36
  • Dew of Repudiation – 46

The materials needed to get Kamisato Ayato’s talents to level 10:

  • Mora – 4957500
  • Crown of Insight – 3
  • Teachings of Elegance – 9
  • Guide of Elegance – 63
  • Philosophies of Elegance – 114
  • Old Handguard – 18
  • Kageuchi Handguard – 66
  • Famed Handguard – 93
  • Mudra of the Malefic General -18

On these lists there are a few rarer items that you need to keep in mind when grinding for materials:

Dew of Repudiation

The dew of repudiation item is available from the Hydro Hypostasis world boss. Whilst the Hydro Hypostasis is not necessarily locked behind any quest, it does require players to have access to Inazuma.

To do so, you will need to progress through Archon Quest Chapter 2: Act 1 – The Immovable God and the Eternal Euthymia.

Crown of insight

Crowns of insights are only obtainable through special events in Genshin Impact but don’t worry, these events are running more or less all of the time, so you’ll be able to get your hands on some in no time.

Mudra of the Malefic General

The Mudra of the Malefic General is an item dropped by the weekly trounce domain boss Magatsu Mitake, Narukami no Mikoto, otherwise known as the Raiden Shogun boss.

To unlock this boss fight you will first need to complete the Archon Quest Chapter 2: act 3 – Omnipresence Over Mortals and the Raiden Shogun story quest: Imperatrix Umbrosa Chapter: act 2

Whilst this item is not a guaranteed drop, you can use an item called Dream Solvent to convert other boss drops into the one you need. regardless, collecting trounce domain boss materials can sometimes become a slog, so I’d recommend jumping online with some friends to make the fight go a little faster.

Kamisato Ayato Playstyle

Kamisato Ayato is predominantly the main DPS. This means that his playstyle is going to be very similar to most other main DPS characters, however, this does not mean that he cannot be played as a sub DPS with the use of his elemental burst.

What you ideally want to do, regardless of whether you use Ayato as a main or as a sub DPS, is to keep his elemental skill and burst on cooldown as much as possible. This will maximize your damage output and keep enemies affected with ‘wet’ for as long as possible, which will allow you to play with lots of different elemental reactions, which I will elaborate more on a little later.

Talents and Passive abilities

Kamisato Art – Marobashi

Kamisato Art - Marobashi

Kamisato Ayato’s normal attack: Kamisato Art – Marobashi, like most other characters, allows Ayato to perform up to five rapid strikes which in essence means you click your attack button up to five times to complete Ayatos attack cycle.

When you hold your attack button down, Ayato will then use a chunk of stamina to dash forward and attack, dealing damage faster than normal attacks. A plunging attack can also be performed after falling from a height to deal hydro damage to enemies.

Kamisato Art: Kyoka

Kamisato Art Kyoka

Ayatos elemental skill, Kamisato Art: Kyoka causes Ayato to dash forward, leaving an elemental illusion at his previous location. This illusion will explode if enemies are close, or when its duration ends after six seconds, dealing hydro damage.

On top of this, Kamisato Ayato will be able to use his Shunsuiken, converting his normal attack damage into AOE hydro damage, which is then applied at an incredibly fast rate. A buff is also applied which increases the damage of Ayatos attacks whilst using his Shunsuiken scaling off of his HP.

If Ayato leaves the field, the hydro illusion and accompanying buff will also leave, which is why many prefer to run Ayato as the main DPS or burst support, as his buff is only applied to himself.

Kamisato Art: Suiyuu

Kamisato Art Suiyuu

Ayato’s elemental bust ability: Kamisato Art: Suiyuu releases a large area around Ayato which will begin raining down Bloomwater Blades, dealing large amounts of hydro AOE damage to enemies. It also increases the normal attack damage of any characters within the radius, making Ayato very compatible with different elemental builds such as a freeze or vaporize build.

His elemental burst also lasts a whopping 18 seconds. With his elemental burst cooldown only being 20 seconds, likely, you’ll already have Ayatos burst back before it fades from the field, giving Ayatos elemental burst some incredible uptime.

Kamisato Art: Mine Wo Matoishi Kiyotaki

Kamisato Art Mine Wo Matoishi Kiyotaki

After ascending Ayato once, the passive ability Kamisato Art: Mine Wo Matoishi Kiyotaki is unlocked. This ability allows Ayato to gain four Nimisen stacks at constellation zero, and five at constellation two after his elemental skill is used.

Kamisato Art: Michiyuku Hagetsu

After getting Ayato to the 4th ascension stage, his second passive ability Kamisato Art: Michiyuku Hagetsu is unlocked. This ability allows Ayato to regain 2 elemental energy every second he is not active on the field and his elemental energy is below 40.

This helps with his elemental recharge and elemental burst uptime, so I would highly recommend ascending Ayato up to stage 4 as soon as possible, especially if you plan on using him as a burst sub DPS.

Final Remarks

Finally, Hu Tao fans can rejoice, as Ayatos utility passive ability is the same as Liyue’s beloved funeral director. When cooking any dish perfectly, Ayato has an 18% chance to create a bonus “suspicious dish” of the same type, which he no doubt would serve to poor Thoma so he can sample the “interesting” new dish.

In terms of leveling up talents, I’d suggest leveling Ayato’s elemental skill and elemental burst at a relatively even rate, as this is where most of his power comes from regardless of whether he’s your main DPS or your burst DPS.

After that, you can level up his basic attack, but since Ayato’s ability damage scales more from his HP as opposed to his weapon attack, this can be lower on your priority list.

Artifacts

There are a few different artifact sets I’d recommend running with Ayato, but I’d encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you.

Regardless of which set you go for, you’re going to be looking at the same stat distribution to the best that your RNG luck allows.

For your sands artifact, you ideally want attack percentage as your main stat. Like many other characters, the best stat for your goblet is going to be your elemental damage bonus, so for Ayato you’ll want a hydro damage bonus goblet. For the circlet, either CRIT rate or CRIT damage will be good.

In terms of substats, any CRIT bonuses are going to be fantastic, as well as energy recharge as these will really beef up Ayato’s elemental burst. Both attack and HP percentage substats are also desirable as these will buff Ayato’s elemental skill, so if you’re able to avoid getting double defence substats on all your artifacts, they will play well on Ayato.

Echoes of an Offering

Echoes of an Offering

The first artifact set I’d recommend is one of the newest sets to the game: the Echoes of an Offering set. A two-piece set of Echoes of an Offering will increase attack by 18% and a four-piece set gives a 36% chance of triggering ‘Valley Rite’ after hitting enemies with a normal attack. ‘Valley Rite’. when activated, increases normal attack damage by 70% of a character’s attack.

This effect will dispel 0.05 seconds after a normal attack is landed. If ‘Valley Rite’ fails to trigger, the odds of it triggering after the next hit increase by 20% until the effect is triggered.

This set allows Ayato to deal significant damage and is effective regardless of what role he plays in your party.

Heart of Depth

Heart of Depth genshin

Heart of Depth is also an incredible artifact set on Ayato, especially if you intend on using him as a hydro sub DPS. A two-piece set of Heart of Depths will increase hydro damage by 15% and a four-piece set will increase normal attack and charged attack damage by 30% for 15 seconds after an elemental skill is used.

The increase in hydro damage and basic attack damage makes his elemental skill and burst more powerful, which is incredibly worthwhile in any build.

Gladiator’s Finale

Gladiator's Finale

The Gladiator’s Finale set also fits Ayato very well. Just like Echoes of an Offering, a two-piece will increase damage by 18%, however, a four-piece set will increase normal attack damage by 35% if the wielder of this artifact set uses a sword, claymore, or a polearm.

This set will increase Ayato’s damage output considerably so might be a good replacement artifact set if you’re building Ayato to be the main DPS.

Weapons

ayato weapons

Whilst any five-star rarity sword will perform well on Ayato, I don’t want this list to become only five-star rarity weapons because I think that just encourages the idea that you have to pay out to wish for premium weapons to make a character viable when that is simply not true.

The reality is, that Ayato will perform just as well with a four-star rarity weapon as he will with a five-star.

There is of course going to be a difference in damage output, however, this does not make such a huge impact to the extent that the weapon is what makes or breaks Ayato. You should coordinate your choice of weapon with the resources you have available to you at the time.

Haran Geppaku Futsu

Haran Geppaku Futsu

That being said, one of the best weapons for Kamisato Ayato is of course going to be his signature weapon, the Haran Geppaku Futsu. This five-star rarity weapon is available on the Epitome Invocation weapon banner, which is running alongside Ayato’s banner.

The Haran Geppaku Futsu gives a bonus to CRIT rate percentage which is always going to be good on any DPS character. The weapon also allows you to obtain a 12% elemental damage bonus. When other nearby party members use Elemental Skills, the character equipping the Haran Geppaku Futsu will gain one Wavespike stack up to a maximum of two stacks.

This effect can be triggered once every 0.3 seconds. When the character equipping the weapon uses an elemental skill, all stacks of Wavespike will be consumed to gain Rippling Upheaval which will increase normal attack damage by 20% for eight seconds.

Black Sword

Black Sword

Another good weapon for Ayato is the Black Sword. The Black Sword is available after reaching level 30 on the Gnostic Hymn battle pass, so whilst there is still a cost involved, the amount of rewards is far better than simply trying your luck to get a five-star rarity weapon.

The Black Sword increases the CRIT rate percentage stat, much like the Haran Geppaku Futsu, but to a slightly lesser degree. The weapon’s main skill also increases damage from both normal and charged basic attacks by 20% and regenerates 60% of the character’s attack stat as HP when a critical hit is landed. This effect can occur once every five seconds.

Amenoma Kageuschi

Amenoma Kageuschi

Finally, one of the best free-to-play weapons for Kamisato Ayato is the Amenoma Kageuschi. The Amenoma Kageuschi blueprint can be obtained after completing the world quest called “The Farmer’s Treasure” after which it can be crafted at any blacksmith for one Northlander Sword Billet, 50 amethyst lumps, and 50 white iron chunks.

This weapon increases a character’s attack stat and after using an elemental skill,  characters will gain one succession seed. This effect can be triggered once every five seconds. The succession seeds lass for 30 seconds.

Up to three succession seeds may exist simultaneously. After using an elemental burst, all succession seeds are consumed and after two seconds, the character will regenerate six elemental energy for each seed consumed.

Constellations

  • C1 – Kyouka Fuushi: Shunsuiken DMG is increased by 40% against opponents with 50% HP or less
  • C2 – World Source: Namisen’s maximum stack count is increased to 5. When Kamisato Ayato has at least 3 Namisen stacks, his Max HP is increased by 50%.
  • C3 – To Admire the Flowers: Increases the Level of Kamisato Art: Kyouka by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15
  • C4 – Endless Flow: After using Kamisato Art: Suiyuu, all nearby party members will have a 15% increased Normal Attack SPD for 15 seconds.
  • C5 – Bansui Ichiro: Increases the Level of Kamisato Art: Suiyuu by 3. Maximum upgrade level is 15.
  • C6 – Boundless Origin: After using Kamisato Art: Kyouka, Ayato’s next Shunsuiken Attack will create 2 extra Shunsuiken Strikes when they hit opponents, each one dealing 450% of Ayato’s ATK as DMG. Both these shunsuiken attacks will not be affected by Namisen.

Ayato Constellations

Many people will recommend Ayato at either C2 or C4 due to the damage increase and speed buffs, however, this is a very high-cost investment (especially for your wallet) so whilst these buffs would be nice to have, they are by no means necessary for Ayato to be a heavy hitter.

Team composition ideas

Kamisato Ayato is an extremely versatile character and so it’s really easy for you to play him in several different teams. Here I’m only going to outline a few ideas but honestly, the sky’s the limit when it comes to team building in Genshin.

First of all, Ayato would be a perfect fit for a freeze build. Paired with a cryo main DPS like Ayaka or Ganyu with Sucrose for crowd control and Diona healing and cryo resonance, you’ll have a formidable team.

A vaporise build is also a popular choice. Running Ayato with Xiangling and Bennett and an anemo sub DPS like Kaedehara Kazuha to increase elemental damage will make a relatively low-cost team that can deal high damage.

Both Xiangling and Sucrose will play very well with Ayato, and as they are both featured on the event wish banner with him, will make a great choice to build a team. Put on your favourite support character and you’ll be good to go!

Q & A

Question: I haven’t reached Inazuma yet, should I still pull for Ayato?

Answer: Short answer: If you like the look of Ayato, you should pull for him. Long answer; Ayato is an incredibly versitile character who can find a place on any team, however you need to remember that until you reach Inazuma, you wont be able to ascend him up very far. So only pull for Ayato if you want to, and plan ahead, as he wont be doing significant damage until you can get his ascention materials!

Question: How useful is Ayato for open world exploration?

Answer: Although Ayato doesn’t have any skills that would make him particularly useful for open wolrd exploration like Kazuha, as a character who has a tall model, Ayato can sprint and climb faster than characters with shorter models allowing you to get around the world slightly faster. Whilst this is nice, don’t pull for Ayato expecting him to make your world traversing any less tedious.

Closing thoughts

Kamisato Ayato is an incredibly versatile character who can fit into anyone’s team. If you are interested in him I would highly recommend pulling for and building him. He works well in many scenarios and there are many free to play teams and weapons that he can work well with.

This on top of the fact that the only artifact substats you really don’t want to see are defence makes the head of the Kamisato Estate a very worthwhile character to own.
