- Justice, What It Means to You?
Whenever a new nation launches in Genshin Impact, everyone in the community is eager to see the latest changes, exploration mechanics, and characters.
Several encounters in the game teased the Hydro nation in Teyvat’s favorite newspaper, Fontaine’s Steambird. Being the Hydro nation, everyone had anticipated some form of diving mechanics and underwater exploration, and Fontaine did not disappoint at all.
A mesmerizing underwater ecosystem with special creatures, meadows full of luxuriant plants, and exquisite modes of transportation on water, Fontaine has delivered the best exploration experience so far.
With quirky tweaks to characters’ skills underwater, Fontaine’s exploration has a nimble learning curve to it. All the sub-regions have a pleasant vibe to them, making them fun to explore and allowing the player to unravel the hidden mysteries of the nation’s history via quests.
In this Genshin Impact Fontaine Region guide, I will give you a brief overview of Fontaine, its culture, sub-regions, and notable characters you will encounter in your journey in the land of justice.
Come join me on an Aquabus ride to the city of Fontaine, where we’ll order local delicacies at Café Lutece and discuss bosses, the underwater world, and must-know things before you purchase your first diving gear.
Abode of the God Of Justice, Fontaine
On the surface, Fontaine looks like any other nation, bustling with life where people live in harmony. However, the impending doom of a prophecy keeps common folk on their toes. Nobody is willing to give up their life, although they weren’t real people in the first place.
Maybe one day, all Fontainians will turn into water once again. Although Inazuma looked like an oppressed nation, Fontaine took it to another level. Child trafficking, murders, organized crime, and blackmail are still rampant to this day.
However, while these activities fester in the dark, Fontaine’s judicial system always tries to stay a step ahead of the criminals.
The Iudex of Fontaine, Neuvillette, oversees all court cases in front of the Oratrice Mecanique d’Analyse Cardinale. No one can escape the judgment of the Oratice, whether it’s aristocracy, noblefolks, or heinous criminals.
Besides the usual plot, Fontaine’s inventions are spread throughout Teyvat. Though they might not be as progressive as Snezhnaya, inventions like the Kamera, Icewind Suite, Clockwork Mekas, and even the Oractice are the fruits of Fontainian creativity.
Melusines, Oceanids, Humans, and all sorts of races live in harmony in the nation and contribute towards the betterment of the society. Lore-wise, we get to know the history of these races and how the Seven Sovereign dragons used to rule the land.
World Bosses, Trounce Domain Bosses, and Domains
World Bosses
Emperor of Fire and Iron
- Boss description: An armored crab that uses its horns to attack the players with Pyro and Physical damage. A type of Fontemer Aberrant who has evolved over the centuries and now hunts anyone who comes in the vicinity.
- Damage types: Pyro and Physical damage
- Best characters to use: Hydro characters like Xingqiu, Yelan, Sangonomiya Kokomi, Barbara, Furina or Neuvillette.
- Unique drops: Emperor’s Resolution, Agnidus Agate Sliver, Agnidus Agate Fragment, Agnidus Agate Chunk, Agnidus Agate Gemstone
- Artifact drops: Gladiator’s Finale, Wanderer’s Troupe, Berserker, Instructor and Adventurer
- Tip for the boss: Focus on the boss’s horns and use Electro or Hydro characters to break the Pyro shield faster.
Ice Wind Suite
- Boss description: The Icewind Suite boss cannot be normally challenged as you have to interact with an NPC to trigger the combat. There are two variations to the boss with different abilities and rewards. You can either choose to challenge the “Dirge of Coppelia” or the “Nemesis of Coppelius,” depending on your material requirements. You can stun the bosses using Pneuma or Ousia attacks; however, you have to have Fontainian characters to use these attacks. The “Nemesis of Coppelius” can be paralyzed by using Ousia attacks during their climax phase, whereas Pneuma works for the “Dirge of Coppelia.”
- Damage types: Anemo and Cryo
- Best characters to use: Raiden Shogun, Lyney, Xiangling, Bennett, and Xingqiu; you can brute force the boss.
- Unique drops ( Dirge of Coppelia ): Artificed Spare Clockwork Component-Coppelia, Vayuda Turquoise Sliver, Vayuda Turquoise Fragment, Vayuda Turquoise Chunk, and Vayuda Turquoise Gemstone
- Unique drops useful on- Lynette
- Unique drops ( Nemesis of Coppelius ): Artificed Spare Clockwork Component- Coppelius, Shivada Jade Sliver, Shivada Jade Fragment, Shivada Jade Chunk, and Shivada Jade Gemstone
- Unique drops useful on- Navia and Freminet
- Artifact drops ( Common ): The Exile, Instructor, Lucky Dog, Gladiator’s Finale, Wanderer’s Troupe
- Tip for the boss: Don’t focus on stunning the boss. Bring your best team with a good healer and defeat the boss.
Prototype Cal. Breguet
- Boss description: An experimental Field Generator turned into a boss. Usually, the boss will fire off lasers, missiles, or bombs to deal Physical damage; however, when the Gravitation Reduction field is active, it will switch to Geo attacks. The characters will experience enhanced jump height during the field. The boss is vulnerable to Pneuma-aligned attacks in this phase, and hitting it with 3 Pneuma charges will stop the Gravitation reduction field.
- Damage types: Geo and Physical damage
- Best characters to use: Raiden Shogun, Neuvillette, Furina, Xiangling, Xingqiu, Bennett, and Nahida; the boss is vulnerable to most characters.
- Unique drops: Tourbillon Device, Prithiva Topaz Sliver, Prithiva Topaz Fragment, Prithiva Topaz Chunk, and Prithiva Topaz Gemstone,
- Artifact drops: Instructor, The Exile, Traveling Doctor, Gladiator’s Finale, and Wanderer’s Troupe.
- Drops useful on- Charlotte and Wriothesley
- Tip for the boss: The boss can be brute forced with hypercarry characters like the Raiden Shogun, Kamisato Ayaka or Alhaitham. Honestly, the boss won’t pose much of a challenge if you have well-built teams.
Millennial Pearl Seahorse
- Boss description: Quite an aggressive boss. You have to focus on the Xenomare pearl between the beast’s legs to debuff its elemental resistance. Otherwise, it will take you a long time to deplete its HP. I highly recommend having Pyro, Cryo, or Dendro characters destroy the pearl.
- Damage types: Physical and Electro
- Best characters to use: Pyro, Cryo, or Dendro characters are very good at breaking the Electro shield. Xiangling, Bennett, Nahida, Baizhu, Wriothesley, Kamisato Ayaka, and Kaeya are pretty decent characters.
- Unique drops: Fontemer Unihorn, Vajrada Amethyst Sliver, Vajarada Amethyst Fragment, Vajarada Amethyst Chunk and Vajrada Amethyst Gemstone.
- Artifact drops: The Exile, Instructor, Traveling Doctor, Gladiator’s Finale, and Wanderer’s Troupe
- Drops useful on- Neuvillette and Chevreuse
- Tip for the boss: Try to deplete the boss’ shield as soon as possible. The boss has aggressive attack patterns and if you don’t dodge in time, your character may perish.
Hydro Tulpa
- Boss description: An aggressive boss that becomes a pain to deal with the longer the fight continues. You will be surrounded by half-Tulpas and receive area-of-effect Hydro damage from the Hydro Tupla. Almost all the elements that react with the Hydro element are good against the boss.
- Damage type: Hydro
- Best characters to use: Pyro, Cryo, and Dendro characters are my favorite against this boss. Xiangling, Bennett, Nahida, Alhaitham, Wriothesley, Kaeya, Ganyu, Klee, Yoimiya, and Hu Tao are some really good units.
- Unique drops: Water That Failed To Transcend, Varunada Lazurite Sliver, Varunada Lazurite Fragment, Varunada Lazurite Chunk, and Varunada Lazurite Gemstone.
- Unique drops useful on – Furina
- Artifact drops: The Exile, Berserker, Adventurer, Gladiator’s Finale, and Wanderer’s Troupe.
- Tip for the boss: Try to use long-range characters, as the boss does a lot of damage in the melee range.
Trounce Domain Boss
All-Devouring Narwhal
- Boss description: We encounter the All-Devouring Narwhal during an Archon quest in Fontaine, where Skirk can be seen confining it in front of us. The weekly boss is available in the shadow of the Another World domain. The combat features three phases where you fight the whale in the first, then shadow, and then switch back to the whale version again. The whale’s attacks are predictable; you can easily dodge them by paying attention to the surrounding environment.
- Damage types: Electro, Hydro and Pyro ( Geovishaps )
- Best characters to use: Bennett, Wriothesley, Jean, Hu Tao, Baizhu, Lyney, Freminet, Ganyu, Kamisato Ayaka, Alhaitham, and Xiangling. You can almost use all the characters.
- Unique drops: Lightless Silk String, Lightless Eye of the Maelstrom, Lightless Mass, Varunada Lazurite Sliver, Varunada Lazurite Fragment, Varunada Lazurite Chunk, Varunada Lazurite Gemstone, Dream Solvent, Midlander Sword Billet, Midlander Bow Billet, Midlander Catalyst Billet, Midlander Polearm Billet, Midlander Claymore Billet.
- Unique drops useful on- Navia, Charlotte, Chevreuse, and Furina
- Artifact drops: The Exile, Instructor, Berserker, Gladiator’s Finale, and Wanderer’s Troupe.
- Tip for the boss: Don’t approach the whale when it’s coming out of the ground; you’ll receive Hydro damage. Additionally, have a team-wide healer in your team to support other characters.
Domains
Domain of Blessing ( Artifacts ): Denouement of Sin
- Domain description: The domain features four types of artifact sets, where two go up to 4-star rarity: Resolution of Sojourner and Defender’s Will, while the remaining two go up to 5-star rarity: Marechaussee Hunter and Golden Troupe.
- Enemies: Clockwork Meka enemies.
- Recommended elements: Pyro, Anemo, Hydro and Cryo
- Best characters: Lyney, Neuvillette, Xiangling, Bennett, Wriothesley, Kaedehara Kazuha, Furina or Sangonomiya Kokomi
- Leyline disorder: Change in a character’s health leads to an increase in CRIT damage for the entire party with a stacking mechanism.
Golden Troupe
- 2-piece effect: The equipping character’s elemental skill damage increases by 20 %
- 4-piece effect: The equipping character’s elemental skill damage further increases by 25 % with an additional 25 % buff if the character is not present on the field. The effect vanishes after 2 seconds once the character comes back to the field.
- Golden Troupe characters: Furina, Fischl, Yae Miko, Albedo, and Nahida ( personal damage ) can be good picks with this artifact set. All these characters rely on their elemental skill to contribute to the team’s damage.
Marechaussee Hunter
- 2-piece effect: The equipping character’s Normal and Charged attack increases by 15 %.
- 4-piece effect: The equipping character’s CRIT rate increases by 12 % for 5 seconds when the character’s HP fluctuates. The CRIT rate can stack up to three times.
- Marechaussee Hunter characters: It is an amazing artifact set for Neuvillette; Wriothesley, Xiao, Hutao, and Lyney. These characters can manipulate their HP, which can help them trigger the artifact’s passive effects.
On top of these artifacts, you may get copies of the Resolution of Sojourner and Defender’s Will.
Domain of Blessing ( Artifacts ): Waterfall Wen
- Domain description: The domain is located near the East slopes of Mont Automnequi. You don’t need to solve a puzzle or do tricky challenges to unlock it. Simply go towards it and activate the waypoint to the domain.
- Enemies: Slimes, Sternshield crab, Bubbler Seahorse, and Cherubic Seahorse
- Recommended elements: Geo
- Leyline disorder: Active characters’ attack increases upon obtaining an Elemental shard created by the Crystallize reaction. With a stacking mechanism, the characters can also emit a Geo shockwave to enemies nearby.
- Best characters: Zhongli, Ningguang, Arataki Itto, Navia. However, you can also use characters from other elements that counter these enemies.
Nighttime Whispers in the Echoing Woods
- 2-piece effect: The equipping character’s attack increases by 18 %
- 4-piece effect: A 20 % Geo damage bonus is granted after using the Elemental skill. If the equipping character has a shield formed by the Crystallize reaction, the skill damage increases by 150 %, which is lost after the shield vanishes.
- Nighttime Whispers in the Echoing Woods characters: Navia and Ningguang
Song of Days Past
- 2-piece effect: The character’s healing bonus increases by 15 %
- 4-piece effect: The effect is quite similar to the Ocean-Hued clam artifact set. However, the active character is buffed according to the amount of healing, which also accounts for the overflow healing done by the supporting character. The damage is increased by 8 % of the total healing amount.
- Songs of the Days Past characters: None ( as of now, there are better artifact sets for healers )
Domain of Mastery ( Character Talent Materials ): Pale Forgotten Glory
- Domain description: The domain doesn’t have formidable enemies that can one-shot your characters; however, you will face Beach Primuses, which can be a pain if the fight stretches. I despise its Lushmissile attack because it can stagger my characters and shred squishy characters’ health.
- Enemies: Breacher Primuses ( Physical, Dendro and Geo variants )
- Leyline disorder: Active character’s Normal, Charged and Plunge attack damage increase if their HP fluctuates during the combat. The effect has a stacking mechanism where each stack is independently calculated.
- Recommended elements: Geo, Hydro, Pyro, Cryo and Electro.
- Best characters: Navia, Raiden Shogun, Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqiu, Yelan, Wriothesley, Kamisato Ayaka or Yae Miko.

Domain of Forgery (Weapon Ascension Materials): Echoes of the Deep Tides
- Domain description: The domain is pretty straightforward and doesn’t require you to perform quirky attacks to finish the challenge. You can use Pneuma-Ousia reactions to stun the mekas. If you are planning to wish on Fontainian characters, chances are, you might need drops from this domain to raise their signature weapons.
- Enemies: Treasure Hoarders, Clockwork Mekas, and Fatui enemies.
- Leyline disorder: The Character’s Hydro damage bonus increases in accordance with a stacking mechanism when they trigger a Hydro-related reaction on the enemies. The character’s resistance to interruption also increases when you reach the maximum stack limit.

Playable Fontaine Characters

With her dual stance, her abilities undergo a transition that makes her more versatile in combat. Regional Specialities
Local specialties are region-specific items that are constrained to a certain nation. They can be used to ascend characters, cook dishes, or even exchange in certain quests. Let’s quickly go over Fontaine’s regional specialties.
Beryl Conch
A conch-like embodiment of condensed energy with a feeble bright glow that can be found under the water. You can use them to ascend Charlotte or craft the Hydro Treasure compass to find treasure chests nearby.
Rainbow Rose
A pink-colored rose with an orange shade often found in the Beryl region can be used to craft the Hydroculus Resonance stone and ascend Lyney.
Romaritime Flower
This purple shade flower is quite abundant in Fontaine. You can find it on both on the land and underwater. Additionally, you could use it to make the Hydroculus Resonance stone along with Rainbow Roses and ascend Freminent.
Spring of the First Dewdrop
Often found underwater in the Morte region, this local specialty can be used to ascend Navia. You can also find it from Pahsiv, who will become an interactable NPC after you complete the Wild Fairies of Erinnyes world quest.
Subdetection Unit
A beetle-like automaton that can be found in the Fontaine Research Institute of Kinetic Energy Engineering Region. That was a mouthful. They can be used to ascend Wriothesley and can also be spotted flying randomly in the wild.
Lakelight Lily
A beautiful light-blue-colored flower that grows in the vicinity of the Erinnyes forest and can also be purchased from Pahsiv. It can be used to ascend Furina.
Lumidouce Bell
A violet-colored-bell-shaped flower that can be found in the north of the Court of Fontaine. With enough of these, you can ascend Lynette.
Lumitoile
A purple-colored starfish-like animal that can be found in the Liffey Region. You can use this to ascend Neuvillette and Chevreuse.

Exploration: On Land And Under the Water
Pneumousia
Every Fontainian character features an energy that could be Pneuma or Ousia. A combination of these two triggers a pneuma-ousia annihilation reaction.
Depending on your character’s Arkhe alignment, Spiritbreath Thorns or Surging Blades will coordinately attack alongside Normal, Charged, or plunge attacks devoid of any elemental application.
These energy attacks have cooldowns. However, they’re mostly used to interact with overworld exploration mechanics. If your team has both Pneuma and Ousia characters, you don’t need to rely much on Pneumousia blocks.
Characters can utilize their innate Arkhe inside the water as well. Pneumousia storage box, Pneumousia-aligned clockwork Meka, Pneumousia relay, all these mechanics need the application of Pneuma or Ousia.
Pneuma has a light aura, Ousia has a dark aura, and the balanced state is bright yellow-green. In case you don’t have Fontaine-based characters, you can use the Sword of Narzissenkreuz to apply Pneuma or Ousia. The sword can switch between Pneuma and Ousia alignment.
Transoceanic Sourcewater and Xenochromatic Creatures
With Fontaine’s blessing, you don’t have to worry about drowning, as aquatic stamina replaces your normal stamina. Even if you deplete your aquatic stamina under the water, you won’t drown.
Fun fact: Fontaine-based characters can dive out of the water while non-Fontanian characters can’t. Aquatic stamina is exclusive to Fontaine and has a blue stamina bar.
Strong underwater channels, rapid currents, and recovery orbs (help to recover HP and aquatic stamina ) will assist with exploration.
Most of Fontaine’s underwater exploration consists of borrowing Xenochromatic Fontemer Aberrants’ abilities that deal true damage to the enemies. By default, you will have a whip-like attack under the water, but it doesn’t deal much damage. Let’s go through them one by one:
- Blubberbeast – You can hold the skill to emit sound waves towards the enemies to deal damage. Plus, you can use this ability to reveal hidden items, acting as a sonar for you. It’s similar to how an echoing conch reveals hidden things.
- Jellyfish – My favorite! The blast radius of this ability is phenomenal. You can throw hat-shaped bombs toward your enemies to trigger an explosion at will with your skill button. I highly recommend using Jellyfish to break rocks, Red meanies, Mini meanies, and aim for remote places.
- Armored Crab – It gives you a shield that can release shockwaves to destroy ores stones and damage enemies. Additionally, you can tank damage from Bullet barnacles, crabs, and underwater creatures and channel a powerful shockwave at them. This ability is also useful in solving Fantastic Floating ball puzzles that sometimes require you to create a barrier around your character.
- Hunter’s Ray – The piercing effect of water blades helps you to slash through Fontemer seagrass and enemies. You get two charges of the ability that can be used by releasing the skill.
- Ball Octopus – The ability will also help you to cleanse Contaminated Bacterial mats, solve Harmonious Reed Pipe puzzles by pushing Dew bubbles, interact with Dangerous autocannons, spin Floating Crystal flowers to reveal Floating Crystal platforms, and charge Potential Energy Orbs. World quests like the Wild Fairies of Erinnyes have a fair use of this ability. You can pick the ability from a device to use it on the land or grab it from an Xenochromatic creature in the water. The ability also helps you deal damage to enemies and interact with an Operational mechanism. This is my most used ability so far.
Conquer Those Puzzles, Challenges and Mechanics
While the game tends to call them exploration mechanics, I simply refer to them as puzzles. Puzzles constitute most of what we do while exploring new regions. Domains, hidden paths, events, and Primogems are the reason we clear these peculiar overworld objectives.
I’m impressed with the variety of puzzles we come across in Fontaine. The majority of the time, you will use Ball Octopus’ ability to interact with these puzzles. Let’s go through a few notable ones that you’ll encounter roaming the wilderness:
- Operable mechanism: They come in all shapes and sizes and require you to set them in a proper alignment. Eliphas Beam and Track Assemblage are spread across the entirety of Fontaine, consisting of interacting with Beam Generators, Beam Receivers, Beam relays, and similar mechanisms.
- Floating Crystal Flowers, Fantastic Floating Balls, Potential Energy Orbs, The Miraculous Antoine Roger Aircraft, and Energy Transfer Devices are potential puzzles you will come across.
- Echoing Conches, Stabilizers, Fixed Storage Devices, Beastly rifts, Hydro Elemental Monuments, Jadewater Fruits, Water Volume Detection Crystals, and Miraculous Hydrograna are a few more mechanics you will come across.
Important Tips for Exploring Fontaine
- Turn off the motion blur in the game’s settings if you feel uncomfortable while making sudden sharp turns. Dedicate some time to swim underwater to get a hang of it; the learning curve is not that high.
- Use Xenochromatic creatures’ abilities rather than relying on your whip-like attack under the water. Whichever area I am in, I always borrow an ability in advance to make sure I’m not overwhelmed by enemies’ attacks.
- Have characters in your party who scale off HP. Characters with chunky HP bars have better survivability than those without them. Thoma, Yaoyao, Barbara, Kokomi, Zhongli, Yelan, Baizhu, Neuvillette, and Hu Tao are good choices, to name a few. Additionally, have the NRE menu equipped in case there’s no recovery orb near you to replenish your HP.
- Try to use Fontaine-based characters to benefit from their innate Arkhe alignment. I use Furina for Pneuma and Lynette for Ousia in my team.
- Characters with useful passives, like Dehya, Freminet, Neuvillette, Lyney, Furina, and Lynette, can help you with exploration in Fontaine. Some of these include aquatic stamina reduction, increased underwater sprint speed, increased HP gain from recovery orbs, and Xenochromatic Fontemer ability cooldown reduction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Which Characters from Fontaine are Worth Pulling for?
Answer: If you like a character’s design and story, simply wish on their banner. However, meta-wise, Neuvillette, Furina, and Wriothesley won’t disappoint you. All of them are really good.
Question: Are Fontaine Craftable Weapons Good?
Answer: I don’t see anything special in them besides the polearm. The polearm is unique and can be used on Chevreuse as she’s an HP scaling character, and the other option on her is Black Tassel, a three-star weapon.
Question: Should I Get the Sword of Narzissenkreuz?
Answer: Unless you don’t have an Ousia-aligned character, you can ignore the sword. The Hydro Traveler is Pneuma-aligned, so you can use it to solve Pneumousia exploration mechanics. Meta-wise, the sword isn’t that great either; there are plenty of better options than this sword.
Justice, What It Means to You?
Don’t sleep on Fontaine’s exploration; the experience is mesmerizing. I love how Genshin Impact has dwelled deeper into the lore, and soon, we will head to Natlan, where the Pyro archon will unravel more secrets of the world.
While we were able to protect people from the said prophecy, we lost numerous comrades along the way. I hope we’ll soon come to know the truth of Khaneri’ah and the Archon war.
With that said, I hope you enjoyed the article and expect to see you in the depths of the underwater area. Feel free to reach out to me if you are up for a game in co-op.
